Farmer's Wife Friday

Whew!  It's Friday again ... already ... its been a wild week with lots of to-dos!  Did you have a busy week too?  I am certainly thankful for the weekend.  :-)

Despite the busy week, I do have a Farmer's Wife Friday update for you all.  Well, sort of.  ;-) I finished up my blocks for the 4x5 Modern Block Swap on Flickr last weekend and I ended up using a Farmer's Wife block for my inspiration. 

I decided to give the #54 Kitchen Woodbox a whirl.  Easy enough (no Y-seams or crazy angles) and I could figure it out without the paper piecing.  I made mine a little bigger - starting with a 3.5" unfinished square for the center.  This gave me a 9" block which I added a 1.5" border to so that it would be 12" when added to my fellow swappers' quilts.

I really love this one with the Half Moon Modern Scissors and aqua and green combo.

Then the all red and white (gotta love Ruby) turned out fun too.

I, of course, love pink and green.  So this might be my favorite just because.

The blue and gray turned out nice as well.  A little less in-your-face girly from the pink and green one above.

And finally a red and green with gray version ... this would be fun for a Christmas quilt, I think!

This was a fun block and they came together quite quickly.  Fussy cutting the centers would be fun to do with this block as well.  I hope my fellow bees will enjoy the blocks I made for them.  :-)

Sewing Seams on ...

About a year ago there was a craze in blogland ... did you join in?  There was a whole lot of Farmer's Wife blocks being stitched up and I bought the book.  I tried a few blocks.  I botched one of them.  (Whoops.)  I joined the Flickr group and gawked at everyone's pretty blocks.  But its been awhile and I'm ready to give it another go.  So, I thought I'd start a little feature on the blog ...

Welcome to Farmer's Wife Friday!  My plan is to stitch up two blocks a month and post my blocks on the second and fourth Fridays of each month.  Once I have enough I will put together a wall hanging or a pillow or something.  :-)  Really, I just want to master the paper piecing and try out some different blocks.  If anyone wants to jump in, I'd love to hear from you ... I can make it a linky post for show and tell if you'd like.

Anyone made a bunch of FW blocks?  Have any tips?  I'd love to see them/hear about them.

So this weekend I am definitely getting in my sewing room and giving my machine a work out ... as soon as I pick out my first FW block!  ;-)

Farmer's Wife Sampler Blocks 1 & 4

Hello ... again!

Have you jumped on the Farmer's Wife Sampler (FWS) bandwagon yet?  I've been hemming and hawing about my fabrics.  I like scrappy, but that intimidates me for something like this.  I think I'll save the scraps for string or spiderweb or something else.  So, I grabbed a long-neglected charm pack, hoping I can squeeze many of the blocks out of smaller blocks. :-)

I also decided to try to paper piece most.  So far, okay.  Here's the first block - Attic Window.

So, I was feeling pretty good ... let's go for another one.  Number 4 - the Basket Weave.  And ... FAIL.

Can you spot the error?!  OMG ... I didn't even realize it until after I took like 5 pictures! LOL  I'm not picking out the teeny tiny stitches, so I'm either going to scrap it or just use it anyway and keep the reminder that no one is perfect.  But I'm sorta OCD too ...

Are you doing the FWS?  Tips or tricks (other than the obvious pay attention when you're sewing! haha)?
